Keyboard Woes

Replacing a MacBook Top Case

I’ve just replaced the keyboard on a MacBook Core Duo laptop. It came into the surgery a couple of days ago with a keyboard problem. A range of keys were not responding – or had to be struck several times in order to work. Now this machine had not been damaged by a liquid spillage, which can often cause a keyboard to malfunction. A series of checks identified that it was a simple case of wear and tear damage as a result of heavy and prolonged usage over many years.

Unfortunately the keyboard on the pre-unibody MacBook’s is fully integrated within the top case and so you have to replace it all as a single part. The bonus is, besides a revitalised keyboard, you get a brand new trackpad and the machine is given a fresh, new look. The plastic around the edges of these MacBook’s are prone to flaking damage with age, this one had been repaired with a touch of araldite sometime in the past, and so the new top case has come as something of a facelift. Good to go for several more years of good use.
