Changing the logic board on a DM3 netbook
Sometimes a poorly laptop comes in which requires major surgery. Such was the recent case with an HP Pavilion DM3 netbook.
Suffering from a failure to boot even to the BIOS screen, extensive checks on it’s key components all pointed towards a failing logicboard as the culprit.
A shame really, not only because this is normally the single most expensive component in most machines but also for the fact that this netbook was scarcely 18 months old.
Replacing a motherboard involves a complete strip down and rebuild of the machine. However, it does provide a good opportunity to carry out further maintenance tasks at the same time such as cleaning out the fan housing assembly and renewing the thermal grease layer to ensure adequate heat dissipation from the processor(s) via the heatsink.
Suffice to say the surgery in this case was a success and, with My PC Surgery’s renowned ability to source replacement parts at favourable prices, one that didn’t cause the owner too much financial pain. With any luck now, the newly revitalised DM3 should give several more years of trouble free service.
