Modern netbooks can be useful and cost effective alternatives to the tablet for people looking for a lightweight machine. They provide all the functionality and more at a fraction of the price of an iPad. However, one problem that seems to be the same across all netbook manufacturers is a reluctance to put enough RAM memory into their machines as standard.
1gb is the norm and to be honest, these days, with the current low price of memory and faced with the job of running Windows 7 Starter Edition – the current favourite amongst netbook operating systems – this simply isn’t enough. Performance can often be sluggish to say the least.
I’ve just upgraded the RAM on an Acer Aspire One 255 from 1gb to 2gb and the difference in performance is quite striking.
If you are comfortable using a screwdriver, the only real problem is removing the keyboard to get at the screws holding the bottom cover in place. A careful hand, lots of patience and the use of an old piece of plastic are all that’s required.
